We’ll explore what it means to be absurd, how to construct believeable fun straight men, and how to identify and exploit that dynamic in the first brief moments of the scene. Saturday, February 14th (4-6pm) Did you know you have a body? Of course you did, yet so much improv involves two people standing around trying to throw jokes at the other person, ignoring the powerful tool for comedy at their disposal. In this workshop, we’ll dip our toes into the shallow end of the clowning and slapstick pool, and see what we can apply to our scenes. We’ll cover creating strong physical characters, basic slapstick and most importantly, and learn how to tell a joke without words. This workshop will focus on developing joyful and supportive anarchy as a performer, so we can cut loose, create joyful moments and attack the scene with gusto. Saturday, February 28th (4-6pm) Next to “Yes, And,” active listening is the improv skill that separates the men and women from the boys and girls. Listening is about way more than hearing and remembering scene details. It’s about being present and open to being emotionally affected by the little moments. It’s about reacting honestly through the lens of our characters to every single thing that happens when the lights come up. Yea, though our cleverness and wits may fail us, solid listening will always make for an engaging scene. This workshop will apply some fancy Meisner acting technique to our improv to give our honest reactions a much needed workout.
