The event creator says
Join us at MonkeyWrench Books on Sunday, Nov 1st for a short documentary screening and informal discussion + planning session to start a radical mental health collective here in Austin!
What is radical mental health?
It means conceiving of, and engaging with "mental health" and "mental illness" from a new perspective. It means celebrating our mental diversity, healing one another through shared community and intentional space. Our struggles for mad justice intersect with others challenging oppressive social relations, including anti-racist, feminist, queer, decolonization, disability, anti-corporate, anti-state and other grassroots community movements. We aim to create a collective of people dedicated to challenging the traumatic world we live in.

We will be showing the short film Crooked Beauty (33 min long)
"Crooked Beauty is a poetic documentary that chronicles artist-activist Jacks McNamara's transformative journey from childhood abuse to psych ward inpatient to pioneering mental health advocacy. It is an intimate portrait of her intense personal quest to live with courage and dignity, and a powerful critique of standard psychiatric treatments."

Afterward we will have a planning session to discuss what we individually want out of this collective, and goals for future meetings.
