The sun’s out, the days are getting longer, and the silly season is creeping closer, which means picnic fever is in full swing. And while everyone loves a classic picnic, we’re all for a day out with a few canned cocktails in the mix. Whether you're after a laid-back sunset aperitif or a lavish spread with the entire group chat, we've done the legwork to uncover the best parks, reserves, and gardens where you can enjoy a picnic – and BYO.

Of course, no picnic is complete without the perfect beverage, and Four Pillars Gin has delivered. They’ve dropped not one, but two new flavour-packed ready-to-drink gin cocktails: the Yuzu, Pineapple and Lime Gin Smash and the Passionfruit and Orange Gin Crush, joining the recently launched Bloody Raspberry and Ginger Gin Punch. Light and fresh, these canned cocktails are your new go-to for sunny picnic sessions. So grab your picnic basket, pack your favourite cocktail tin, and head to one of these primo spots to smash copious amounts of cheese and charcuterie while sipping on an ice-cold cocktail or two under the afternoon sun.

Sydney

Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden

Tucked away in Lavender Bay, just a short stroll from North Sydney, this leafy oasis might not be a secret anymore, but once you're there, surrounded by greenery and feeling miles away, it still feels like one. Lovingly cultivated by Wendy Whiteley, widow of prolific Australian artist Brett Whiteley, this hidden gem offers sweeping vistas of the harbour framed by towering fig trees. A handful of tables and chairs are dotted throughout, making it the ideal spot to crack open a can (or two) and soak up the serenity.

Barangaroo Reserve

Post-work picnic, anyone? One of the newer additions to Australia’s best BYO picnic spots, Barangaroo Reserve is a sprawling foreshore park just moments from Sydney’s CBD. We can’t think of a better – or more convenient – place to enjoy a Four Pillars gin tin in the sun. Alongside its stunning harbour views, you’ll find scenic walking and cycling trails, charming native landscaping, and plenty of tables and comfy spots to settle in for the day.

Melbourne

The Domain Parklands

With boundless gardens and open lawns, this expansive city parkland offers endless options for your next BYO picnic. Whether you prefer the Alexandra Gardens, Queen Victoria Gardens, Kings Domain or the vibrant Royal Botanic Gardens, rest assured – BYO is allowed, as long as your crew is under 50 people. You’re welcome to bring your own food to most areas, however a few specific spots, such as Hendrie Park and the Rock Garden, have restrictions. And if packing snacks feels like too much effort, local favourites like Terrace on the Domain have you covered with pre-order picnic boxes.

Edinburgh Gardens

Once the go-to spot for daytime raves during the COVID era, this Fitzroy North institution has held onto its reputation as the perfect spot to sip on a Yuzu, Pineapple and Lime Gin Smash or Passionfruit and Orange Gin Crush. With endless grassy nooks, a skatepark, barbecues, and an off-leash area, you can sip, snack, and watch pups play, all at once. BYO is permitted between 9am and 9pm, so be sure to plan your gin-filled hangout accordingly.

Brisbane

New Farm Park

A picnic at Brisbane’s heritage-listed riverfront park always packs a (gin) punch. With over 15 hectares of lush green space, glimpses of the city skyline, rose gardens, and rolling fields, it’s an obvious choice for your next BYO hangout. It’s so popular, there’s even an online booking system with four designated picnic areas to choose from. For more information and to book your spot, head to the Brisbane City Council website

Picnic Island Green

Don’t be fooled – this isn’t your typical island. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a prime spot for cracking open a ready-to-drink gin cocktail. Tucked away at the southern end of South Bank Parklands, you’ll find undercover barbecues, picnic tables, and lush landscaping that gives off serious rainforest vibes. Think giant ficus trees, a tranquil pond teeming with fish, and plenty of shade to chill out under. Picnic Island Green is licensed between 10am and 8pm daily. Make sure you remember to pack your snacks – to consume alcohol here, you must have food to accompany your drinks.

If you’re looking to stock up for your next picnic in the sun, Four Pillars cocktail tins are the go. You can buy your Four Pillars Yuzu, Pineapple and Lime Gin Smash and Four Pillars Passionfruit and Orange Gin Crush cans from Dan Murphy's and BWS in-store and online, or directly from the Four Pillars Gin Shop in Healesville and online.

Happy picnicking! Don't forget to pack up after yourself so that you leave these gorgeous parks are just as picturesque as you found them.
