The charming 1850s homestead retains its original layout, now housing five character-filled ensuite rooms named after early settlers, explorers and property owners. Each room nods to its pastoral heritage through warm earthy tones, bedheads crafted from recycled fence posts and fleeces, bedside tables wrapped in wool sacks, and bespoke artwork showcasing local wildlife.

My room, “Bart,” overlooked a native kitchen garden and opened onto a sun-drenched verandah framing the ancient mountain ranges. With zero mobile reception, no in-room Wi-Fi or no TVs, there was nothing left to do but soak up every second of the scenery.

When it comes to relaxing, guests are spoiled for choice. Indoors, a bright lounge room features a small library, a fireplace and a fully stocked South Australian wine rack. Mornings start with a breakfast spread featuring fresh fruit, wattleseed bircher and cereals, toast with lemon myrtle marmalade or quandong jam, plus a hot dish cooked to order. Lunches and dinners are multi-course affairs showcasing native ingredients picked from the garden. Standouts from my stay included housemade sourdough with whipped butter, native thyme gnocchi, Flinders lamb with saltbush dukkah, and decadent mountain berry mousse.

Is there a pool at Arkaba Homestead?

Yes, there is a shaded outdoor swimming pool set within the native gardens just behind the homestead. The pool is unheated, making it a great spot to cool off after a hot day exploring the outback. It’s lined with lounge chairs for you to relax with a book or a cold drink from the open bar.

What are the experiences like at Arkaba Homestead?

Much like an African safari, activities run in the early morning and late afternoon for optimal wildlife encounters. The highlight of my stay was a guided wilderness drive in the property’s open-top 4WD, where we spotted kangaroos, wallaroos, emus and wedge-tailed eagles, and also stopped along the way to sample wild bush foods. I also loved hiking a short section of the Arkaba Walk along a ridge overlooking the homestead, though watching the sunrise from a private lookout on the last morning was the ultimate grand finale.
