As a sun-starved Melburnian, Cairns was my ideal winter getaway destination for a strong dose of warmth and relaxation. I wanted to soak up some Vitamin D and explore the natural wonders of tropical north Queensland, and when it came to accommodation, all I was looking for was a base for my sun-drenched adventures. Hilton Cairns was the perfect place, with its central location and laid-back vibe.
I’m not a high-maintenance type of traveller – yes, it’s nice to be bougie once and a while, but generally I’d rather stay at a hotel that simply ticks all the essential boxes. Hilton Cairns ticks them in spades – it’s not trying to be trendy or flashy, but it’s got that reliable luxury vibe that makes you feel instantly taken care of.
But that’s not to say it doesn’t have wow-factor – the Hilton's location brings a new meaning to waterfront views. When I first walked into my room, my jaw dropped as I marvelled at the genuinely panoramic vista before me. It was stunning – and felt like the essence of the beauty that is abound in tropical North Queensland, that I was eager to explore.
Why stay at Hilton Cairns?
Like many hotels under the famous name, Hilton Cairns has been around for a while, gaining a strong reputation over the years. It’s one of Cairns’ most recognisable hotels – from afar, you can spot the striking curved white structure wrapping around the marina like a cruise ship permanently docked in the city.
But while the exterior leans a little retro, the interiors have been kept up to date for modern times. Think tropical minimalism meets business class comfort, with clean lines and pops of greenery. It’s not over-styled, and it doesn’t need to be – because the star of the show is its surroundings. Many parts of the hotel boast incredible views over the water and across to the mountains, and the boats bobbing in the marina or heading out for the Great Barrier Reef.
Plus, the location is unbeatable. You’re walking distance to everything you need: the Reef Terminal (for snorkel tours and day trips), the bustling night markets, the main esplanade, as well as excellent eateries and bars.
What are the rooms like at Hilton Cairns?
My friend and I stayed in a Double Double Deluxe Room with Waterview, and if you’re going to stay here, it’s worth splurging on the view. Waking up to gaze out at the tranquil water, or sitting on the balcony in the afternoon and watching the occasional reef boat gently puttering out to sea was blissful.
The rooms are spacious, clean and simple, with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that open out to a balcony. If you feel like kicking back with a movie after a big day of exploring, there’s a sleek 55-inch smart television to take care of that. Bathrooms are generously sized with a shower and bathtub, decent water pressure, and a selection of toiletries. There’s also a mini fridge, a Nespresso machine, a desk area and blackout curtains for those post-snorkel naps.
Wi-Fi is fast and free, the bed was genuinely comfy, and the soundproofing is decent enough that we didn’t hear any outside noise, making for a peaceful stay.
What are the best places to eat and drink at Hilton Cairns?
For breakfast, the hotel’s Café Sunrise has a generous buffet in the main dining area. There’s a wide spread: eggs made to order, tropical fruit, pastries, a DIY juice station and lots more. Add in a table with waterfront views, and it’s a brilliant way to start the day.
Signature is Hilton Cairns' evening dining offering, open just from Thursday to Saturday. The menu features classic á la carte cuisine with locally sourced ingredients in a relaxed luxury setting. After dinner, hit up the hotel’s cocktail bar Gin Social for a cheeky nightcap.
Beyond the hotel, there are plenty of top-notch nearby eats. If you’re a seafood lover, you must go to Prawn Star for a pre-dinner appetiser. It’s a restaurant situated across four small boats in the marina, where you can indulge in the freshest oysters and prawns. For the main meal, try Bayleaf Balinese for tasty dishes like satay skewers and nasi campur. For drinks, head to Three Wolves – a hidden whisky and cocktail bar tucked down an alley – or the rooftop bar at Rocco for sunset spritzes. For a caffeine fix, check out Blackbird Laneway.
What is the service like at Hilton Cairns?
The hotel staff were warm and helpful – I checked in late at night, but I was still met with the same friendliness as if it were first thing in the morning. I was even offered an upgrade to the Executive Lounge, which is a private area that offers a continental breakfast as well as sunset cocktails and canapés each day. The Hilton Cairns staff all embodied the kind of attentive-but-calm service that makes you feel looked after without being fussed over.
What are the facilities like at Hilton Cairns?
Hilton Cairns offers all the essential facilities you’d expect at a good quality hotel. The outdoor swimming pool is a highlight – lagoon-style with loungers, umbrellas for shade and plenty of space to relax. Plus, there’s a spa pool that’s nice and warm if you feel like an extra relaxing soak. From a poolside lounger, I could see out over the inlet and to the mountains, which really made for a peaceful vibe. There’s also a small fitness centre on site with cardio equipment and weights, which has enough to get the job done if you want to work out.
What’s the area like around Hilton Cairns?
You’re in the heart of Cairns here, so everything is at your fingertips. Walk two minutes and you’re at the Esplanade Lagoon, a free public swimming area surrounded by palm trees, public art and grassy areas to lounge. The Reef Fleet Terminal is right next door, which is ideal if you’re heading on boat tours to spots like Green Island or snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef. The Cairns Night Markets are a short stroll away for souvenirs, clothing and jewellery, snacks or even a post-dinner foot massage.
Rusty’s Market has delicious fresh fruit and South East Asian bites, or further afield, you can take a quick Uber to the Cairns Botanical Gardens to be immersed in a lush tropical paradise. There’s no beach in central Cairns, but you’re perfectly positioned for day trips to spots like Palm Cove or Fitzroy Island, where you can swim.
