Stepping into Mantra PortSea Resort felt a bit like wandering into a Mediterranean escape, with archways lining the crisp all-white exterior, light spilling into the airy lobby and a huge art installation swinging above. Unlike many of my friends, I’d decided to forgo a Euro summer, instead opting for a sunny Queensland getaway to break up Melbourne’s brutal winter. So it was lovely to feel like I wasn’t totally missing out, as this hotel still had the same holiday vibe, but without the incredibly expensive airfare to get there.
If, like me, you find yourself heading to Port Douglas in search of a relaxed seaside escape, Mantra PortSea Resort is a solid pick that has a true tropical holiday feeling.
Why stay at Mantra PortSea Resort?
Situated a short walk from the picturesque Four Mile Beach and Port Douglas’ main strip, Macrossan Street, with a plethora of cafés, bars, boutiques and galleries, Mantra PortSea Resort’s location is the sweet spot for proximity to both beach and town. While the hotel is simple, it still felt like a special stay, with the sprawling lagoon swimming pool in the centre of the hotel adding a real wow-factor. Plus, in an area that has plenty of fancy hotels, this one also has the affordability factor, which is a huge plus for saving your holiday budget for the many activities you can do from Port Douglas.
What are the rooms like at Mantra PortSea Resort?
My friend and I stayed in a One Bedroom Superior Studio, which was airy with light‑wood furnishings, white linens, and pops of teal and green. The kitchenette was a homely touch (bonus: there was a bottle of bubbly chilling in the fridge), and the room had crisp air‑con, a ceiling fan and access to a large balcony with a dining area overlooking the tranquil pool below.
The ensuite had a spa bath, which is a fun treat after a tiring day of adventurous activities. The living area had two comfy couches, so we didn’t feel cramped when kicking back, as well as a big TV.
What are the best places to eat and drink near Mantra PortSea Resort?
While there’s no full‑scale restaurant, the resort offers a simple continental buffet breakfast in a dedicated dining room – think fruit, yoghurt, pastries, cereal and coffee. It’s not a full buffet, but it’s certainly enough to kickstart the day before scuba diving trips or rainforest hikes. A highlight of the hotel is the swim‑up bar at the central lagoon pool, which offers cocktails, cold beers, and light lunch options like salads or snacks until early evening.
A short walk gets you to Macrossan Street, where there are heaps of choices for eating out. La Cucina and Melaleuca are both nice spots for dinner, or for a bit more of a lively vibe check out the Court House Hotel, where there’s live music most nights. Down the road at the marina, there’s the Tin Shed for waterfront bevs.
What is the service like at Mantra PortSea Resort?
Staff were warm, helpful and very informative when we checked in, helping us to navigate the hotel. One point to note is that this accommodation is a non-service hotel. In this case, that means that the rooms aren’t made up each day, and towels aren’t refreshed. So if you want a new towel, you have to organise it at the reception.
What are the facilities like at Mantra PortSea Resort?
The lagoon pool is truly a spectacular sight, with multiple swimming spots sprawled across the centre of the hotel. There’s the swim‑up bar in the central lagoon, plus a plunge pool, spa and even a waterslide. Plus, with plenty of poolside space for lounging in the sun, it really gives the vibe of a mini tropical oasis. There’s also a fitness centre, tennis court and games room with a pool table. It has everything you need to unwind after a big day exploring the natural wonders of the surrounding area. There is a free car park, but there are no elevators in the hotel, so be mindful of this if you have accessibility needs.
