Forget worrying about check-in times. While you can officially unlock your room at the Mövenpick Hotel Hobart from 2pm, the only clock that actually matters is the one ticking down to 3.30pm. That’s when the hotel’s famous free daily ‘Chocolate Hour’ begins, where all guests can enjoy exclusive, house-baked cocoa-infused desserts.
Making its grand debut in 2021, the Mövenpick Hotel Hobart officially marked the brand’s first opening in Australia. If the name rings a bell, you’re likely thinking of the gourmet ice cream brand. The two businesses share the same sweet DNA, both created by Swiss entrepreneur Ueli Prager in the mid-1900s, though they operate as independent brands today.
As the city’s third-tallest building, the hotel’s sweeping views are serious postcard material, or perhaps Insta-worthy, in this day and age. It sits on the fringe of the CBD, right near the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and steps from the waterfront precinct – ideal if you’re all about that city life. But if you’re planning on staying in, Mövenpick has you covered with a fitness centre, a vibrant Italian restaurant – Tesoro – where you can expect tableside cheese-wheel pasta, afternoon antipasti and an excellent hot breakfast offering.
All of the hotel’s 221 deluxe rooms make the most of the building’s height with floor-to-ceiling windows – some impressing with guaranteed water views. Inside, each room is designed for comfort with plush beds, luxe linens, pillow menus, rain showers and Nespresso machines for your AM (maybe even PM) caffeine hit.
During my stay, I checked into one of the Superior King City View rooms, specifically requesting a bathtub. I appreciated the balance of style and functionality, including a small table set-up catering for business travellers, unique Tasmanian artwork that grounds you in time and place, and blackout blinds that sent me into a deep snooze. The hotel also scores bonus points for sustainability, ditching plastic water bottles and opting for refillable bathroom amenities by YUNI Beauty.
Located right on the ground floor of the hotel, Tesoro (which translates to "treasure" in Italian) is far from your average hotel restaurant. In the morning, you can enjoy a continental buffet alongside a succinct à la carte selection of hot dishes. Think buttermilk waffles, slow-braised fagioli (Italian pasta soup with beans) and their specialty chorizo and scrambled eggs number on toasted Imago Bakery sourdough.
From 3pm to 5pm, Tesoro transitions into a moody space for daily aperitivo hour, featuring a menu of antipasti, small plates and twists on Italian cocktails. When dinner rolls around, the kitchen fires up, serving house-made pastas, flame-grilled seafood, dry-aged Tasmanian meats and excellent wood-fired pizzas. The hero of the menu is Tesoro’s theatrical cheese-wheel experience, where a chef whips up a delicious cacio e pepe tableside in a 25-kilogram wheel of pecorino. It’s an absolute chef’s kiss!
From 3.30pm to 4.30pm daily, all guests enjoy a free Chocolate Hour, featuring house-made treats exclusive to the Mövenpick Hotel Hobart. Think freshly baked brownies and blondies, mini éclairs and tarts, and seasonal bonbons made by the local chocolatiers from Anvers Tasmania. On top of this, children aged 12 and under score complimentary Mövenpick ice cream!
If you need to burn off all those chocolate calories, there is a small, 24-hour gym located on the second floor. It gets the job done with a few cardio machines, exercise balls and dumbbells. Avoid peak times if you don’t want to wait around for equipment.
While the Mövenpick Hotel Hobart doesn’t house its own pool, guests score discounted access to the Savoy Day Spa next door. This beautiful bathhouse features a traditional sauna, steam room, two spas and a magnesium pool.
The Mövenpick Hotel Hobart is located smack bang in the centre of the city on Elizabeth Street. It’s an easy seven-minute stroll to Brooke Street Pier, where MONA ferries depart, or ten minutes to the historical Salamanca precinct, home to the popular Saturday Salamanca Markets. The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is also just one block away, with plenty more local attractions and eateries right at your doorstep. We particularly recommend booking Mövenpick Hotel Hobart as your base for Tasmania’s Dark Mofo midwinter festival.
