They say nature is the best medicine, and having just returned from six days hiking the Larapinta Trail, I can confirm it’s 100 per cent true. If you’re keen to swap screens and schedules for slow travel and surreal sights, then Australia’s newest nature escape comes at the perfect time.

This winter, one of Queensland’s best multi-day hikes, the Scenic Rim Trail, is set to launch a new four-day self-guided walk. Since 2009, adventurers have only been able to tackle this exclusive, 60-kilometre trail as part of a guided trek – one that's earned its place as the state's only inclusion in the highly regarded Great Walks of Australia collection. But the new format will finally allow seasoned hikers to explore the trail independently, without carrying a tent, food or any overnight gear.

Covering up to 18 kilometres per day, hikers can discover the wild wonders of Queensland’s hinterland region at their own pace, scaling majestic mountain ranges, navigating rocky boulders and venturing deep into the lush, misty World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforest.

While the self-guided walk is designed for those with strong navigation skills and a high level of fitness, you won’t have to haul any heavy gear while hiking. Each afternoon, you’ll get to stay at the Scenic Rim Trail’s exclusive lodges and eco-camps, inclusive of all meals, hot showers and comfy beds. Talk about the perfect mix of adventure and luxury!

The new self-guided walk opens for bookings on June 10, 2026, with monthly departures currently available and additional dates to be released soon. You can find out more here.
