Let’s be real: nobody looks forward to a long-haul economy flight. Sure, those flying high in business or first class might feel differently with their fancy three-course meals and lie-flat beds – but for the rest of us, a marathon flight is really just something to survive before the real holiday can actually begin.
However, your next long-haul trip could be a whole lot comfier thanks to Emirates’ new economy chairs. The Dubai-based airline – crowned ‘Best Airline in the World’ by the ULTRAs for eight years running – has soft-launched the world-first U-Dream Headrest, featuring adjustable side padding designed to hold your head in place while you sleep.
Unlike standard economy seats with those rigid fold-out ‘wings’, Emirates’ new U-Dream Headrest uses fully flexible side panels that curve inward to gently cradle your head and neck. This means no more waking up with your head cranked forward or slumped onto your neighbour’s shoulder (don't worry, we’ve all been there).
Built to accommodate short queens and tall kings alike, the headrest slides up and down and tilts at multiple angles for personalised support. Plus, it’s made of leather that can be easily wiped down and cleaned after every flight.
So far, the U-Dream Headrests have been installed on three of Emirates’ Airbus A350s, operating primarily across the Middle East, Europe and Asia. In collaboration with Safran Seats, Emirates plans to install them on its entire A350 fleet by the end of the year, then on most of its Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s from 2027 onwards. Since all Australian routes – departing from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide – are serviced by Emirates' two flagship aircraft, local travellers can expect to test out the game-changing seats next year.
Those flying in premium economy also have fancy upgrades to look forward to, including six-way adjustable headrests, built-in charging ports and side cocktail tables. Just another excuse for a Mimosa in the sky, hey?
