The stunning 85-metre waterfall reopened on July 1, featuring a new track to the upper rock pools

Update Thursday, July 2: Gunlom Falls officially reopened for the 2026 dry season on July 1 following access road repairs required after cyclone damage.
Aussies can once again recreate iconic Crocodile Dundee moments now that one of the country’s most famous waterfalls – featured in the film – has officially reopened for the 2026 dry season. Located in Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory, Gunlom Falls had been closed for almost six years after Parks Australia built a walkway too close to a sacred rock art site belonging to the Jawoyn Traditional Owners. A new lease agreement between the Commonwealth and Kakadu’s Traditional Owners paved the way for the reopening in mid-2025. Now, after road repairs due to cyclone damage, the falls are once again open for the 2026 dry season.
Gunlom Falls, known as Echo Lake in Crocodile Dundee, is best known for its starring role in the classic film in a scene where Mick Dundee (Paul Hogan) takes Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski) for a swim in the picturesque natural pool at the top of the falls. The waterfall’s reopening couldn’t come at a better time, with the beloved film celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Kakadu Tourism Chair, Lauren Ganley, said the reopening of Gunlom Falls represents an important new era in Kakadu’s tourism future. “There is no destination in Australia more culturally unique than Kakadu, and so it is essential that we respect the heritage and culture of Traditional Owners in the way the Park is presented to visitors,” said Ms Ganley
Along with the lower plunge pool, visitors can access a series of natural infinity rock pools at the top of the falls via a new track made available to the public last year. The steep trail takes around 15 to 20 minutes, but hikers will be rewarded with a refreshing swim and panoramic views across the southern part of Kakadu National Park. Gunlom Campground will also reopen to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.
One of Kakadu’s other popular natural wonders, Maguk Falls, is also set to reopen shortly, following extensive upgrades to the access road after cyclone damage during the wet season.
