Cruising holidays are booming in Australia, with millennials and Gen Zers leading the charge

We get it: sometimes ship happens and you just need to escape it all. You could go completely off-grid on a multi-day hike, disappear to a secluded wellness retreat… or simply sail away on a cruise, where food, accommodation or activities are all taken care of for you.
Cruising holidays are having a serious moment in Australia, and are set to be bigger than ever in 2026. New data from the Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF) Australia reveals more than one in three Aussies are planning to set sail this year, which is a mega 26 per cent jump since 2024. Surprisingly, it’s not retirees behind the boom. TTF's national survey of 1,500 Australians found millennials and Gen Zers are the most ‘cruise curious’, with 44 per cent of under-35s and 42 per cent of 35-to-44-year-olds (a key family demographic) looking to go on a cruise this year. By comparison, just 20 per cent of Australians aged over 65 are planning to set sail.
Carnival Cruise Line’s assistant vice president of sales and marketing, Anton Loeb, says, “About one-third of our guests are now aged under 35, reflecting the growing appeal of cruising for families and younger Australians wanting a stress-free holiday, with so much included in the cabin fare, including dining and entertainment.”
When you think about it, cruises are pretty good bang for your buck. They bundle accommodation, meals, activities and transport all into one package, oftentimes giving you the best value for money, especially for families.
TTF CEO Margy Osmond says, “Cruises are increasingly catering to younger travellers and families, with incredible new onboard experiences. From surf simulators and indoor skydiving to trapeze schools, mini golf and even salt therapy lounges, innovation never stops. Add world-class dining and spectacular shows, and there’s something for everyone.”
So, where are Aussies sailing away to in 2026? Airlie Beach/the Whitsundays and Sydney – both famed for their beautiful beaches – tied for the top spot as Australia’s most popular cruise destinations. Following them were Hobart, Melbourne, Hamilton Island and Cairns. As for overseas cruises, New Zealand takes the lead in 2026, followed by Europe, the South Pacific (including Fiji and Vanuatu), Japan and Tahiti.
