If you have a pet called Luna, you’re officially mainstream

Naming a pet is tricky business. Free from Australia’s list of banned baby names, pawrents can call their fur-babies anything from Chicken Nugget and Cannoli to Sundae or Coffee. While these food-inspired names are trending across the US right now, Australia’s top dog and cat names are a little more tasteful (pun intended).
For the fourth year running, Luna has claimed the top spot for both dogs and cats in Compare the Market’s annual tally, compiled from thousands of submissions through its 2026 pet insurance quote data.
Compare the Market’s Chris Ford says, “If you’re choosing Luna because you think it’s ‘a little bit different’, it turns out you’re actually in pretty good company. Pop culture references such as Harry Potter’s Luna Lovegood and the ’90s cartoon series Sailor Moon have helped make the name popular, especially among millennials.”
Coco, Milo and Charlie all crossed over into the top ten for both dogs and cats – and we have no doubt you’ll run into one next time you visit your local dog park or cat café. But there’s a clear split in how we name our pets…
While Australia’s favourite dog names lean heavily human (think Daisy, Frankie, Archie and Bella), we like to name our felines after sweet treats, with Mochi and Oreo both making the top ten cat names this year. You can check out the full top ten pet names below.
