While they’re tiny, these spots are sure to take up some serious storage on your phone’s camera roll. Here are ten of our favourite small towns in Australia that are beautiful in both looks and community spirit.
1. Stanley, TAS
Stanley is a restored Bass Strait fishing village full of brightly painted 19th-century timber cottages. Built around ‘The Nut’ – a 52m volcanic plug rising out of the ocean – it’s full of charm and character. Ride the chairlift or walk to the summit for sweeping views, then wander down to the historic fishing docks that line its quiet, wind-swept streets.
2. Port Fairy, VIC
Located 3.5 hours from Melbourne at the end of the Great Ocean Road, this charming fishing village was named one of the 20 most beautiful towns on Earth by Condé Nast Traveler – and we couldn’t agree more. Soak up the rugged beachside scenery, check out the antique shops and historic 19th-century cottages, and grab a pint at The Stump, Victoria’s oldest continuously licensed pub.

Home to Queensland’s oldest national park, Tamborine Mountain delivers hinterland beauty in spades. Here, you can lose yourself in ancient subtropical rainforests, discover rushing waterfalls and soak in sweeping views across the valley to the Gold Coast skyline. Back in town, the tree-lined Gallery Walk charms with 70 storefronts, including cute boutiques, craft breweries and cosy tea houses.
4. Bangalow, NSW
This quaint historical town behind Byron Bay trades coastal crowds for quiet hinterland charm. Its wide, palm tree-lined main street is a true beauty, lined with 19th-century Federation buildings that now house cute boutiques, cafés and bars. Time your visit with the monthly Bangalow Market, where 11 giant camphor laurel trees create a magical, forest-like setting for local artisans.
5. Kalbarri, WA
Kalbarri’s beauty comes from its stark landscape contrast, where red outback dirt and towering sandstone cliffs meet sparkling turquoise ocean. Here, you’ll also find the remote Loop Walk, which an eye-tracking study recently named the eighth-most beautiful trail on Earth.
6. Hahndorf, SA

8. Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba, NSW
Tucked away in the lush, emerald hills of the NSW South Coast, these twin villages are entirely heritage-listed. The main strip is lined with beautifully preserved Victorian timber storefronts, surrounded by flower gardens, farms and coastal valley views.
9. Bright, VIC
Victoria’s High Country boasts some of the state’s most scenic – and storied – walking and cycling tracks. In autumn, make a beeline for Bright to wander beneath its famous European-style tree canopies. Tucked into the rolling hills of Tasmania’s Coal River Valley wine region, Richmond earned the title of Australia’s most beautiful town in 2024 – and it’s easy to see why. Home to Australia’s oldest colonial-era bridge, an eerie convict-built gaol and a charming Georgian streetscape, this historic town looks like something straight out of a period film.
