We’re officially less than 100 days out from Australia’s biggest data collection. Every five years, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) counts every person and household across the country to provide a snapshot of our nation’s economic, social and cultural DNA. It’s called the Census of Population and Housing, and it’s happening this August.

The 2021 Census was the largest ever conducted in Australia, counting more than 25.4 million people and 10.8 million households. With our population now surging toward 28 million, this August’s count is set to smash those records again. Here’s everything you need to know about the next Census in Australia.

When is the next Census in Australia?

The 2026 Census will be held nationwide on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

What is a Census?

The Census is the largest data collection in Australia, conducted by the ABS every five years. It provides insights into the lives of residents and visitors across the entire country, including small geographic areas and small population groups.

The Census form asks questions about everything from demographic characteristics, like age, birthplace, marital status, family size and religion, to education levels and occupations. In 2026, the Census will include new questions on sexual orientation and gender for individuals aged 16 years and over.

This year's Census results will be released in three phases from June 2027 to mid-2028, forming the backbone of Australia’s future planning across government, business and community sectors.

How to do the Census?

Whether you’re at home, in a hospital, on a houseboat, at a campground or in a retirement village, you must complete the Census wherever you're staying on Census night.

From late July, Aussie households will receive instructions on how to complete the Census. You can complete the form as soon as it arrives, as long as you know where you’ll be on August 11.  While most households will complete it online, paper forms are still available for those who prefer them. ABS field staff will be available to assist people living in remote areas or those experiencing homelessness to ensure no one is left out of the national count.

Who to include in your Census?

If you’re filling out the Census on behalf of your household, you’ll need to include every single person sleeping under your roof on August 11. That includes partners, kids, housemates, friends and visitors.

When was the last Census in Australia?

The last Australian Census was conducted on Tuesday, August 10, 2021.

How often is the Census?

The Australian Census of Population and Housing is held every five years.

Is the Census compulsory in Australia?

Yes – under the Census and Statistics Act 1905, the Australian Census is compulsory for all permanent residents, overseas visitors and temporary visa holders in the country on Census night.
