Australia is a nation that runs on coffee. Whether it’s a morning caffeine hit, a relaxed cuppa with croissants or a sneaky afternoon pick-me-up, it’s a part of almost every adult’s daily routine. To mark International Coffee Day on October 1, we're spilling the beans on the most popular coffee orders in Australia – so you can see just how mainstream your go-to brew really is.

Did you know that after water, coffee is the second-most-consumed beverage in the world? Australians drink more than six billion cups every year, and generally, we opt for the same order every time. New research commissioned by one of the farmer-owned nation’s biggest dairy co-ops, Norco, surveyed more than 1,000 Aussies across every state and territory to reveal which coffee reigns supreme.

Let’s spill the beans… The classic cappuccino, with equal parts espresso, steamed milk and foam, came out on top as Australia’s most popular order, with 26 per cent of the vote. Perhaps it’s the frothy texture or that cheeky dusting of cocoa on top that fuels our addiction.

One in five (21 per cent) opt for a flat white, which is creamier than a cappuccino, while 18 per cent prefer a milky, mellow latte. Overall, the results prove Aussies favour milk-based coffees (72 per cent), with 40 per cent saying a creamy texture is the key to a ‘perfect’ coffee, and almost one third saying milk quality is more important than sweetness or even barista skill.

Only six per cent of Australians reach for a no-fuss, no-foam long black, while iced coffee follows at five per cent (though we’re sure that number spikes in summer). Just one per cent of Aussies choose a chai or matcha over coffee, which is surprising given Australia’s current obsession with matcha. You can check out where your order ranks below.
