If you thought burrata was so 2024, you were so wrong. Australia’s foodie scene has reached new heights in 2025, serving up everything from lab-grown meat and edible cutlery to bubble tea cocktails and adult Happy Meals. Yet despite all the culinary craziness, a fresh analysis of our dining habits shows burrata is still one of the country’s top trending foods.
Every year, OpenTable gathers data from hundreds of thousands of diner reviews to reveal the top 50 restaurants in Australia. In 2025, the popular online booking platform dug a spoonful deeper to uncover the ten foods and drinks that increased most in popularity over the past 12 months.
Australia’s love affair with all things Japanese is showing no signs of slowing – and it helps explain why sake was the top trending keyword in 2025. Mentions of the rice wine in diner reviews jumped a mega 46 per cent year-on-year, as more Aussies sought out the fermented flavours they fell in love with while travelling. Sake flight, anyone?
When it comes to edibles, burrata takes the crown, surging 26 per cent in the past 12 months. It’s not only a menu staple across a range of cuisines, but it’s also riding the social media wave, with cheese pulls everywhere you scroll. Burrata pairs perfectly with focaccia, which came in as the fourth trendiest keyword in diner reviews, up 21 per cent from 2024. And you might as well add a plate of arancini, which rose ten per cent.
Mocktails are having their moment too, with mentions in diner reviews up 26 per cent – and we predict the low- and no-alcohol trend will continue to grow in 2026. You can explore more of OpenTable’s 2026 dining trend predictions here.
