But let’s be real: most of us want the beauty and relaxation of a seaside holiday without having to fight for a car park or battle for sand space in a sea of striped cabanas.
Enter Mooloolaba. While it’s long lived in the shadow of its flashier neighbours, this low-key Sunshine Coast suburb is undergoing a multi-million-dollar glow-up of its foreshore and parklands. Pair that with the arrival of the region’s first major hotel opening in almost 40 years, and Mooloolaba is on track to become Australia’s next big coastal hotspot. Mark my words!
Historically, Mooloolaba's charm lay in its simplicity and walkability. You can easily stroll between the beach, the esplanade’s shops and restaurants, the surf club and The Wharf (the launchpad for most local water adventures), making it the ideal spot for a car-free getaway. But while the precinct has plenty of character, its accommodation offerings are dominated by dated hotels and serviced apartments stuck in the early 2000s – a far cry from Noosa’s high-end resorts. Until now.
In May 2026, Mooloolaba finally got the missing piece in its puzzle to becoming one of the nation’s best seaside destinations: the five-star Avani Mooloolaba Beach Hotel. Tucked just one block back from the shimmering ocean, the property houses 180 stylish rooms and suites, three exceptional dining destinations (including the uber-cool Sully’s Rooftop), a luxurious day spa, and the region's highest infinity pool. It’s the exact brand of effortlessly chic accommodation you’d expect in Noosa or Byron – and precisely what Mooloolaba needed to secure its spot on Australia’s luxury travel map.
This is only the start of Mooloolaba’s glow-up. A multi-million-dollar revitalisation project is currently underway, marking the single largest investment in community parkland, facilities and coastal protection in 25 years. Set for completion in early 2027, the new foreshore won’t just be a game-changer for locals and regular visitors, but it will position Mooloolaba as a premier coastal asset ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.
So far, the project has delivered one hectare of revitalised parkland, complete with a raised boardwalk, scenic viewing platforms, a playground, accessible coastal pathways, new public amenities and undercover barbecue areas. Next up is stage two: a $13.3-million Central Meeting Place, featuring 6,500 square metres of additional beachfront parkland, a broad coastal pathway, more amenities, and an overhaul of the 1960s seawall.
Whether you’re lounging poolside at Avani with a cocktail in hand or taking a sunset stroll along the upgraded foreshore, one thing is certain: this seaside gem won't stay under the radar for much longer.
