We all know Skyscanner from those times when we’ve been tempted to book an impulse trip and need to quickly suss out costs. The global travel app has long been a lifesaver, helping us find the cheapest flights across different airlines – but this year, it’s gone one step further.
Skyscanner has just launched a smart new tool that reveals the ten cheapest destinations to travel to from Australia in 2026, also breaking them down by month and even highlighting the cheapest day to fly (spoiler: it’s typically Saturday).
According to Skyscanner’s latest research, almost 60 per cent of Aussies are planning to head overseas this year. It’s no surprise that cost is the biggest barrier to actually locking in those plans, with 72 per cent delaying their booking because of high prices.
If you’re keen to lock in travel plans before it becomes a last-minute scramble, Skyscanner’s new Cheapest Destination Planner is here to save the day. This nifty tool takes the guesswork out of planning by revealing the ten cheapest places to fly to from Australia, broken down by month so you can time your trip perfectly.
The cheapest destination on average for Aussie travellers in 2026 is Cairns, with return flights averaging just $340. It’s a small price to be at the gateway of two World Heritage-listed wonders: the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. Beyond the natural attractions, Cairns offers a laid-back tropical vibe, bustling markets, and a range of cafés and restaurants perfect for refuelling after a day of adventure.
The second most affordable destination to fly from Australia is the beautiful Queenstown in New Zealand, at an average of $654 return. Other top ten picks include popular overseas spots like Nadi (Fiji), Singapore, Seoul and Hong Kong, alongside less-visited gems such as Taipei and Colombo (Sri Lanka).
