These ten scenic Aussie towns are up to 40 per cent cheaper right now

When the temperature drops Down Under, the typical Aussie instinct is to flee toward the Northern Hemisphere. But with Euro summer priced out of reach for many this year, new Expedia research reveals that one in two of us is planning a domestic winter escape instead. We’re big fans of the cooler months – not just for whale watching, truffle hunting and cold plunges, but for the chance to beat the crowds and dodge the peak-season price tag.
To encourage Aussies to travel smarter this winter, Expedia has unveiled the top ten destinations where your dollar goes significantly further now than it did in the height of summer.
Topping the list of best-value destinations for winter is Byron Bay. While this boho beach town is famous for its world-class surf beaches, wholesome farmers’ markets and farm-to-table dining, it’s anything but quiet during the summer rush. Winter, however, is prime time to visit. The holiday crowds drastically reduce, meaning you won’t have to fight as hard for the best whale watching spots, restaurants and parking spots. According to Expedia, you can also save up to 40 per cent on accommodation.
If you’re keen to save your moolah and completely ditch the crowds, Apollo Bay is another top pick for a winter getaway. This stunning seaside stop along the iconic Great Ocean Road is 35 per cent cheaper during the cooler months, plus up to 90 per cent quieter.
Sorrento, Kangaroo Island and Marcoola are other top-tier Aussie destinations for the cooler months. With crowds dropping by up to 55 per cent, you can lap up the winter sunshine in peace. If you’re after a more classic winter escape, Launceston and Margaret River are the best-value choices for vineyard hops and cosy nights by the fire.
