Bursting with 80s nostalgia and a whole lot of attitude, Heathers the Musical has long held its place as a global cult favourite. With news dropping that the hit show is headed to Australia and New Zealand, excitement is skyrocketing, and what better way to fuel the anticipation than by meeting the fresh, talented cast behind the popular production?

For anyone unfamiliar with the show (where have you been?), Heathers the Musical is based on the 1989 film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. The stage adaptation is wickedly funny and, well, a little bit dark, capturing the brutal politics of high school life and the romance that comes along with it.

The production is directed by celebrated American stage and screen director Andy Fickman. “We can’t wait to share this twistedly heartfelt story with audiences Down Under. It’s a show about love, heartache, defying expectations, and being true to yourself,” Fickman says. Following hit runs in London and New York, the musical arrives on Australasian shores with a killer soundtrack by award‑winning writers Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives) and Laurence O’Keefe (Legally Blonde: The Musical).

But, bringing the real energy to the much-loved show is the cast, packed to the rim with fresh new talent and breakout roles – that means it’s your chance to catch them all here first. The production is led by Emma Caporaso in her principal debut as Veronica Sawyer, known for her powerhouse vocals and magnetic stage presence in productions such as Legally Blonde and Footloose.

Starring opposite her is Conor Beaumont as JD, the charismatic rebel with a smile you can’t resist, whose previous credits include American Psycho

Running the show are the three Heathers: Calista Nelmes stars as Heather Chandler, known for RENT, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Jersey Boys. Amélia Rojas takes on Heather Duke, fresh from her run in Chicago, and completing the trio is Abigail Sharp as Heather McNamara in her professional debut.

Rounding out the cast is a lineup of standout performers: Mel O’Brien (FANGIRLS, Mel & Sam) as Martha Dunnstock; Zoe Gertz (Come From Away, Legally Blonde, Wicked, Les Misérables) as Ms Fleming and Veronica’s Mum; along with David Cuny (Elvis: A Musical Revolution, The Lord of the Rings: A Musical Tale) and Nic Van Lits (Jesus Christ Superstar, The Rocky Horror Show, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat) as Westerberg’s resident jocks, Ram Sweeney and Kurt Kelly.

Heathers the Musical tours Australia and New Zealand from April to October 2026, with tickets starting from $69 plus booking fee. For more information about tour dates and venues, visit the website.
