When young Indian woman Arati decides to look for work to help her family out financially, everything seems to be working against her. It's frowned upon for a married woman with children to bring home the bacon instead of staying home to look after her family. Only her husband decides to give her permission, for the good of the family. Under the beautiful portrait of daily life created by director Satyajit Ray, Arati refuses to live under the patriarchal conservatism of the society around her.
