Melanie (Tippi Hedren), a well-to-do and snooty young woman from San Francisco's high society, happens to meet lawyer Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) in a bird shop. He who knows about her life from having read about her in the papers and so treats her with indifference and leaves the shop. Not accustomed to being treated that way, Melanie is annoyed, buys some parakeets and shows up at Mitch's mother's house in nearby Bodega Bay. As soon as she arrives, birds gone crazy wildly begin to attack all the town's inhabitants. The situation only worsens with the passing hours.
