Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art says
Autumn Sonata was the film that finally brought together the two most renowned Bergmans in cinema: Ingmar and Ingrid. In her final film role, Ingrid Bergman gives a commanding (and Academy Award nominated) performance as Charlotte, a classical pianist who visits her adult daughter (Liv Ullmann) after a long absence. The tensions long dormant between the two of them begin to emerge as Eva confronts her mother over what she perceives as years of emotional neglect. The film is a moving study of filial binds, expertly crafted by a filmmaker whose understanding of the complexities of the human spirit was incomparable.

Autumn Sonata will screen from an archival 35mm film print.
