BRISBANE POWERHOUSE says
Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Fred Schepisi’s seminal film with this special screening at the 17th annual Brisbane Queer Film Festival.

A special 40th-anniversary gala screening of The Devil’s Playground sees Simon Burke in his AFI Best Actor award-winning role, the youngest ever winner at just thirteen years old.

The story revolves around Tom Allen, a 13-year-old boy growing up in the rigorous confines of a 1950s Catholic seminary, torn between the demands of the priesthood and his own burgeoning sexuality. Winner of multiple AFI awards, including Best Screenplay and Best Director, The Devil’s Playground is writer-producer-director Fred Schepisi’s semi-autobiographical feature film debut. A stark yet sensual study of the imminence of desire, even amidst the most austere of surrounds, Schepisi’s film remains a deeply controversial portrait of religious sexual repression.
