To celebrate our Strung exhibition, weavers from Queensland Basketmakers are hosting a weaving jam at artisan. Come along and watch these talented basketmakers in action, or bring your own weaving project and join in! All welcome.

About the Queensland Basketmakers

Queensland Basketmakers are a fledgling group of fibre artist and basketmakers spread all over Queensland. The group was formed at a get-together of making and creating on Bribie Island, entitled ‘The Chook Scratch’ in 2014.

About the weavers

+ Christine Robinson

Having mastered stitching and fabric manipulation techniques as a young woman, Christine is inspired by ‘women’s work’ of other generations and cultures.

+ Mary Elizabeth Barron

Mary employs traditional craft techniques, like basketry, papermaking and bobbin lacemaking in new ways often using non-traditional materials such as old clothes or plastic bags.

+ Cara Sutcliffe

Cara Sutcliffe is a member of the Basketcases, QSWFA and combines the ancient skills of spinning, needle work and basketry with animal fibres, plant fibres and local resources. Her formative years were spent collecting beads and observing village women create billums, grass skirts and jewellery, near Goroka, Papua New Guinea. Cara is the founder of Hidden Heritage Retreats and Workshops which focuses on basketry and fibre arts as a connection to self, the environment, community, creativity and well-being.
