The Hitch Hiker 1953 Pg says
Two friends quickly regret their decision to pick up a hitch hiker on their way to a fishing trip in Mexico when their new passenger reveals himself to be a serial killer on the lam from the law. The Hitch-Hiker was directed by Ida Lupino and is commonly considered the first, and still one of the few, noir films directed by a woman. It is a lean, mean exercise in tension where the tight confines of the car are contrasted against the vast open plains of the desert through which they are driving – with neither offering a means of escape from the killer with a loaded gun in the back seat. The film is based on the spree killings of real-life murder Billy Cook, which took place only a few years prior to the film's release.
