Preteen Visions And Rituals *As Recalled By A Full Grown Adult says
“When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up”
- C.S. Lewis, On Three Ways of Writing for Children (1976).

Preteen Visions and Rituals is a collection of photographic/video installations and found object sculptures by artist Shawn Mayer. This exhibition was created as a way to reconnect and ponder on a pre-educational aesthetic, which is heavily influenced by childhood rituals and imaginative play. The work includes robotic upside-down Christmas trees, distorted yearbook photos, and Child craft encyclopedias whose purpose is to recapture the unabashed wonder and confidence of pre-adolescent expression. Mayer’s exhibit is a visual language that in many cases, is not intended for an audience beyond oneself, making it free of self-censorship and rich in inner exploration.
