Before The Mass Incarceration says
Please Join Us on April 25th 2017 from 1:30pm-3:30pm for our event: Before The Mass Incarceration. Dr. Russell Endo will be the guest speaker, a retired University of Colorado Denver professor of Ethnics Studies who specializes in Asian American studies. Light refreshments will be provided!

Many people are aware of the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII. Fewer know what happened beforehand, specifically the detention/internment of thousands of Japanese, German, and Italian immigrant leaders, including those in Colorado, who were seen as risks to national security. Prior to the war, many had been placed on special government lists, and their arrests began mere hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This talk will use government documents, diaries, and oral histories to present preliminary findings from a National Park Service-funded project that focuses on the Japanese and the Tuna Canyon Detention Station in Los Angeles. Unlike the unconstitutional mass incarceration of Japanese Americans, what occurred beforehand was legal under U.S. law---so it can happen again today for other groups who are seen by the government as national security threats! It locates in Tivoli Multicultural Lounge.
