About Phelps Rogers’ “More Than One Tough Chick” –

Laura’s new work embraces her favored medium of cast iron. With the medium, she contrasts the soft and feminine with the hard cold durability of iron. The expected and the unexpected together pushing the boundaries of gender expectations.

About Karen Roehl’s “From Where I Stand” –

Denver artist Karen Roehl has long been, and continues to be inspired by the energetic and bold works of the Abstract Expressionist artists. In her most recent body of work, Roehl explores connection and contrasts, the nature of their opposition and how they may connect. Roehl writes, “I visualize contrasts as … bookmarks to a set of data strung like beads in between. Each bead marks an incremental change from one end to the other — a gradation of information. And through that line of beads, the two endpoints are connected. Two extreme endpoints have a path that unites them. To extend the metaphor, how does communication and interpretation work between the end points of self with others and our external environments; between the various, often conflicting internal thinking centers? These works are about the many ways that data from our visual world interact with and become interpreted by our individual selves. They play with contrasts and gradations as a way to explore how diversity and tangled views strung together by infinite beads can create an overall big and beautiful picture, from where I stand.”
