Robert Hawkins ‘Scenes From The Wax Museum’ // Opening Reception says
Gallery51 - Behind the Buffalo Exchange.

“You cannot name one painter of his generation comparison with whom Basquiat would not find laughable. The exception would be Robert Hawkins, whose work Jean admired and collected.” - Rene Ricard

Join us for the opening reception to celebrate Robert Hawkins' rare, large collection of his well-known witty paintings, ‘Scenes from the Wax Museum’, featuring watercolor portraits of various cultural icons from Edgar Allen Poe to Lady Gaga.

Respected as a true rebel in the art world, Hawkins had no formal art education aside from 50 years of self-taught painting experience. His natural gift for manual dexterity and hyperactive imaginative and visualization skills carried him through the heady NYC art world of the 70s, 80s and 90s and led him to London, where he currently resides. Due to his limited proper training, his style can be called “pseudo-realism”, as it imitates technique and other academic precision, like proportion and anatomy, lending an askew aspect to a generally surreal picture narrative.

The art will be showing at Buffalo Exchange Colorado’s Gallery51 from May 27 - May 29, 2016.
