RULE Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of work by Jacob Feige entitled Cutaways. This will be artist's first solo exhibition in Denver, CO. The show will open with a public exhibition on October 23, 2015, from 6-9pm, and will be on view October 23-December 5, 2015.Additionally, the gallery will have extended hours on First Friday, November 6, 2015 from 6-9pm coinciding with Denver Arts Week.

In Cutaways, Feige uses a distinctive technique to examine the ways people can be disconnected from their lives. Painting intimate scenes on canvases that have tape applied to selected areas, Feige then removes the tape, revealing “cutaways”, or empty areas of raw canvas which he fills with views into alternate spaces. The result echoes a cinematic technique known as a cutaway; an edit which jumps from an intimate shot, such as a close-up of a face, to a broader view of the landscape. By doing this, Feige explores our tendency to "cutaway" from the present moment, sacrificing our experience of the immediate while striving for ideal conditions or concerning ourselves over future needs and wants.

In much of his recent work, Feige has explored abstraction and utopian geometry in the context of landscape, bringing together disparate references from the Hudson River School, Buckminster Fuller, and Drop City. The works in this exhibition mix this with subject matter directly observable in and around his house and inspired by people close to him. Elements are also drawn from his family life, such as a school form-letter which fills one painting's field of view. Bringing all this together on the canvas, Feige creates a disjointed modern world where the intimate and the distant intermingle, allowing one to question which is more significant, the first scene or the cutaway.
