What’s on in Helsinki this week

Autumn is a season of transition, and at Café Clé’s Tarot & Aperitivos evening, the cards might just reveal which way the winds of change are blowing. Aperitivo is served from 5–8pm, and every guest gets their own tarot reading during the evening, focused on a theme or question of their choice. Expect Italian and French cheeses, bread, jam and olives, with drinks sold separately.

Book lovers and literary minds gather once again for one of autumn’s biggest cultural events, the Helsinki Book Fair, running from 22–25 October. Thousands of programme items bring together topical discussions, fascinating guests and, of course, new books across every genre. Book clubs give authors and readers a chance to meet and discuss the latest releases, while this year’s overarching theme is language.

Taking place at Messukeskus at the same time, Wine & Food adds plenty of delicious distractions. Expect the Finnish grape-stomping championships, wine tastings, plenty to eat and the announcements of Finland’s Chef of the Year and Waiter of the Year. And since books and cooking are a natural pairing, visiting authors will also take to the kitchen to cook and talk about their new releases.

Expect rapid-fire bars when rising rapper Senya takes over Tiivistämö in Suvilahti for an all-ages show. Known for her assured delivery, Senya also made a strong impression during this summer’s festival season, opening Flow’s Sunday programme to a packed crowd. At Tiivistämö, expect tracks ranging from breakthrough hit Ikonista to the recent single Mä nautin.
