"The Sum of Many Parts: Quiltmakers in Contemporary America" and "Mid-Florida Quiltmakers: Commemorations and Connections"

Crealdé will be one of the first U.S. hosts for this internationally traveled exhibition of quilts, which was originally sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and toured in China before coming to the U.S.

Folklorist Teresa Hollingsworth and curator Katy Malone of South Arts in Atlanta selected artists with diverse backgrounds and paths that led them to quiltmaking, including Native American quilter Bonnie LeBeau from South Dakota; Dottie Moore of North Carolina, a longtime fiber artist who depicts scenes from nature; Erick Wolfmeyer of Iowa, whose quilts are inspired by the Midwest landscape; and Louisiana Bendolph from Alabama, following the tradition of Gee’s Bend quilts.

Hannibal Square Heritage Center also will host this two-venue exhibition, which features "Mid-Florida Quiltmakers: Commemorations and Connections," curated by folklorist and author Dr. Kristin Congdon. This juried exhibition comprises 15 stunning quilts, variously stitched by quilters who have made Florida their home. These quilters, both traditional and innovative, explore color, composition, and storytelling in ways that will delight and engage diverse audiences.

The September 11 opening-night festivities begin with the presentation “Unraveling Quilts: Roots and Wings” by Teresa Hollingsworth and Dr. Kristin Congdon, from 6–7 p.m. in the Jenkins Gallery on the Crealdé main campus in Winter Park. The reception follows from 7–8:30 p.m. in the Jenkins Gallery, and then continues with live music from 8:30–10 p.m. at Hannibal Square Heritage Center. Free.
