The Standard is part of the burgeoning cluster of bars and restaurants in the redevelopment of Roe Street. At the helm, John Parker brings experience from London and Melbourne to bear for an offering behind the bar and in the kitchen that is well honed, without feeling like a bandwagon is being jumped on.
Food comes courtesy of head chef Chase Weber, formerly of No.4 Blake Street. Banish any thought of bar-food filler. This is seriously good stuff, from the Fava chips to the 36-hour pork. Wine by the carafe, decent craft beer, a good deal of rosé and jugs of Pimms are just the job for summer in the large “wine garden”, accessed from the front bar or the rear laneway (now also home to Sneaky Tony’s). The prime spot has to be the deck atop the shipping-container bar, with views towards the CBD skyline.
