Contingencia is a photographic project exploring the aesthetics of the photographed female nude informed by classical nudes that manifest both portrait orthodoxy and Western art culture. Drawing upon Roland Barthes’ concept of the punctum as read through Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytical concept of the Real, the project endeavoured to develop an aesthetic of visual pleasure to liberate the female nude from a predominant psychosexual reading, and advocate a revisualisation of the nude as a less sexually objectified form. This exhibition represents a body of creative work produced as a part of Larry Defelippi’s Honours Research.

Photographed in Colombia with a medium format film camera, the photographs reflect the contingent and serendipitous elements that are a hallmark of analogue photography. The negatives developed in Colombia were beset with numerous processing faults resulting in an abundance of artifacts – scratches, stains, squeegee marks, and light leaks. These artifacts contribute to an aesthetic that speak of the contingencies of the developing world, while also providing the work with entirely unintentional detail that questions the blunt factuality of photography.
