Drum and Bass (also written as "Drum & Bass" or "Drum n Bass" and commonly abbreviated to "D&B" (or DnB") is a type of electronic music that emerged in the UK in the mid-1990s. The genre is characterized by fast breakbeats (typically between 160-180 beats per minute) with heavy bass and sub-bass lines.

By 1994 "jungle" had begun to gain mainstream popularity and had become a recognizable part of British youth sub-culture. The genre further developed, incorporating and fusing elements from a wide range of existing musical influences. As the genre became more polished and sophisticated technically it began to expand it's reach from pirate radio to commercial stations gaining widespread acceptance, it also began to split into various recognizable sub-genres such as tech-step, jump-up and liquid funk.

Flash forward to 2016 and we have a genre renowned as one of the most carefully structured, complex and best produced forms of music in the modern world, with a sphere of influence continuing to expand with unstoppable force and affecting millions of listeners all over the globe (that's us yo!)
