First Floor A Solo Exhibition By Lily May Roberts says
A debut exhibition of handmade collages
created by Lily May Roberts

... launches in the evening on Monday 9th May at the Bird
musical support from don & jon, out of hibernation
and Rhys Watson from Dirtwater Bloom

"Collage is the noble conquest of the irrational, the coupling of two realities, irreconcilable in appearance, upon a plane which apparently does not suit them."
Max Ernst

Thus images from disparate sources are brought together in collage to find a new relationship. In some cases, the pictures are forceful, the final product hard-won, yet the result a startling revelation, even for the artist.
Other cuttings, paper-thin, precious and fragile as they are, might nestle together as snugly as lovers, content against their new surroundings.

The arbitrary nature of collage lies first in the seldom-acquired source material, but also in the hands of the artist - the collector, the cutter, the two-dimensional environmentalist, who sits down to create a picture, and ends up telling a story.

"The creation of the world did not take place once and for all time, but takes place every day."
Samuel Beckett

The pieces in this exhibition are turbulent and whimsical. Each collage becomes a little world of it's own, a static assembly of colour and form. Lily's collages touch on the idea that there are worlds different from our own,
where mountains flow downward,
flowers hold up the sky,
and ordinary people are individual deities,
threaded and wreathed in light.

"Inhabiting the life of the imagination is the nature of survival strategy - you build yourself little worlds to enjoy."
John Darnielle

Lily May Roberts is a creative, and a chaos. This is her first exhibition. There will be some original pieces for sale, as well as a limited run of of certain prints. The work will remain up at the Bird for three weeks. Get amongst it, x
