Free Range is proud to present a special, one night only event with artist Taylor Reudavey.

EXHIBITION OPEN: Fri 31st March, 6pm - 8pm, with special guest speaker at 7pm.

Awkwardness and conviviality: in their purest sense, two mutually exclusive social atmospheres. Conviviality is generated by a sense of responsive togetherness; awkwardness, on the other hand, by discomfort, discord and confusion. Both seem fairly innocuous, though each are initiated and sustained under certain power structures, whether they are acknowledged or not.

So when does a convivial encounter become awkward, and an awkward encounter convivial? Under whose influence, and at whose expense? Is a convivial social custom made awkward by an individual saboteur, or are its intentions and boundaries so unclear and unspoken that such disruptions are fairly innocent, or perhaps even inevitable?

Drawing (mostly) from a young and educated social milieu, AWKWARDNESS AND CONVIVIALITY attempts to explore the power dynamics of its titular social moods through a series of relational experiments, where the consequences (and virtues?) of their interplay will be made apparent in actual and hypothetical realms.
