It's no secret that we humans love a day at the beach, but our beloved canine fur babies are just as partial to a stretch on the sand. Beaches are a great place to take your furry friend to cool off, socialise with other salty sea dogs, exercise and play, but you can't take your four-legged friend to just any beach.

So, to avoid any awkward moments with disgruntled anti-dog beachgoers, head to these shores that are perfect for your pooch. We've put together a list of Perth’s nine best dog-friendly beaches, from South to North.

Calling all salty sea dogs

CY O’Connor Beach, North Coogee

CY O’Connor Beach, North Coogee

Let your dog run wild at this beach, situated at Rollinson Road, North Coogee. Rarely crowded, the long stretch of coast sweeps CY O’Connor (South) Reserve to the North Reserve. Keep an eye out for the SS Wyola shipwreck, which is located about halfway. There’s a grassed reserve, public shelters and barbecues for a post-walk cook-up. And public toilets, if you’re desperate!

South Beach

South Beach

If you’re a Freo local with your own furry friend, you should know South Beach like the back of your hand. For those not from the area, there is parking galore – great for those summer days when it seems that half of Perth is at the beach – and a big grassy area, perfect for a picnic on a balmy afternoon. You can also fire up the public barbies to sizzle some snags.

Leighton Dog Beach

The sweeping white sandy beach and crystal-clear shimmering turquoise water are a dog’s heaven. On a day with little wind, the ocean will be flat and glassy, but as the breeze picks up you might be able to take to the tides with the doggo to surf the small waves or stand-up paddleboard. After your walk, grab a coffee or maybe brekkie at the Orange Box – a local favourite, particularly for families.

Grant Street Beach, Cottesloe

Grant Street Beach, Cottesloe

Perched between North Cottesloe and Swanbourne and on the corner of Grant Street and Marine Parade, Grant Street is another of Perth’s best dog beaches. If you’re a Cottesloe local and your fur baby has a taste for salty sea and wind-swept hair, the beach is a very convenient option.

Floreat North Dog Beach

Floreat North Dog Beach

Like the majority of our beautiful Perth beaches, Floreat North Dog Beach boasts white sand and stunning aqua waters. You’ll be pleased to know that there are no rocks, so you and your pooch won’t suffer a stubbed paw even if you’re not looking where you’re going. The beach is popular with dog owners as it’s less crowded than Peasholm Dog Beach, which is located just north. There’s a water fountain and a shower for you and your dog to rinse off, so you don’t bring the beach into the car.

Peasholm Street Dog Beach, Scarborough

Peasholm Street Dog Beach, Scarborough

You and your furry buddy will be sure to make a friend, or maybe ten, at Peasholm Dog Beach. It gets pretty busy in summer but is a great spot for the whole family, with shallow water and sand banks perched close to the shore. If you’re keen to get some good exercise in, walk a couple of kilometres south to Floreat Beach.

Bennion, Trigg Dog Beach

Bennion, Trigg Dog Beach

Bennion is home to a few reefs and rocks, so it is best to visit on those calmer days. The beach lies at the foot of Bennion Street, spanning Kathleen Street, and is a lovely spot to take a walk with your pooch.

North Beach Dog Beach

Located a short stroll from the Flora Terrace strip, the dog exercise beach is nestled along the stunning West Coast Drive. Rocks frame the beach at both ends, so if you’ve got a “runner”, this is a good option to keep your doggo within sight. It’s a small walk of only about 500 metres, so it's also ideal for older dogs that can't manage marathon walkies. There aren’t many rocks in the water, so you can go for a sunset dip with your pooch after your walk. You can access the beach from the end of Lawley Street, just watch out for the steep rocky section. You can park at the North Beach jetty lookout, then you’ll walk down the pathway and steps for about 500m to the beach.

Whitfords Dog Beach

Whitfords Dog Beach

This charming and no overly-crowded beach is both long and wide, so it's perfect for pooches who love a bit of space to roam. Thanks to its sheltered position, the waves aren’t too big here, so it’s a great spot if your fur ball is keen to swim with you.
