Spoken Word Perth says
Thank you to everyone who came to our last event, GROW. We had a great night: we all opened up and it feels like we’re really ready to enter that big, wide world. But…are we? I mean, it is a BIG world out there, with a lot of dangerous people and plants and politicians…maybe we need to talk this out. So, to that end, we present our next event

S A F E

In Australia, we’re surrounded by safety. And spiders and snakes and sharks but, mostly, safety. But it’s not for everyone. There are people fighting to protect safe schools and safe spaces and safe sex. There are people who are not safe in their own homes and skin. There are people sitting in detention centres off of our coast because certain people are afraid of them.

But…in a world where everyone can feel afraid or uncertain
sometimes, what makes you feel safe? Tell us about the music and the poems and the people and the books and the teas and the blankets that you like to surround yourself with. Tell us if you need a hug. Tell us anything you want; we promise your secrets are safe with us.

Join us on WEDS 6th JULY, we’ll provide the safe space, you provide the poetry: 10 OPEN MIC SPOTS AVAILABLE. Five minutes each. Five will be available on our Facebook an hour before the event, and five at the venue. Make sure to get in early if you want to secure one.

Speaking of safe spaces, this week, Spoken Word Perth welcomes a poet from out of town…ABE NOUK. As well as being a poet, Abe is a hip-hop fanatic, MC, author, Australian National Poetry Slam finalist and the founder of Creative Rebellion Youth. Expect to learn something and then to feel something and then to applaud something.

MC and Human Fruit, JESSIE APPLEYARD, will also be on hand to protect the world from devastation, unite all peoples within our nation, denounce the evils of truth and love and extend our reach to the stars above. Jessie!

Don’t forget to keep an eye on our Instagram @spokenwordperth for more from our feature poet in the lead up to the event. We hope to see you.
