The Australian Regional Gothic
A panel discussion with 'Bedazzle' artists and invited guests

“In Australia alone is to be found the Grotesque, the Weird, the strange scribblings of Nature learning how to write. Some see no beauty in our trees without shade, our flowers without perfume, our birds who cannot fly, and our beasts who have not yet learned to walk on all fours. But the dweller in the wilderness acknowledges the subtle charm of this fantastic land of monstrosities…” Marcus Clarke, 1893

What is the Gothic? …and how has it been applied to an Australian regional context? Why might it be useful for artist who want to make work in a post-colonial context, and what problems or contradictions may this raise?

Join us at FORM Gallery on Monday 29 August for refreshments and stimulating discussion exploring these themes in relation to the FORM exhibition, 'Bedazzle – Photographing Western Australia’s Gold Towns', and iconic Gothic texts such as DH Larence's 'Kangaroo' and Joan Lindsay's 'Picnic at Hanging Rock', that explore anxiety within the regional landscape.

Panel speakers will include invited guests Dr. Travis Kelleher (FORM) and Dr. Anna Nazzari (Curtin University), 'Bedazzle' artists Dr. Thea Costantino and Rebecca Dagnall, and 'Bedazzle' curators Mollie Hewitt and Andrew Nicholls.
