Jump into the deep end with FTIs UNDERWATER CINEMATOGRAPHY Workshop, taught by cinematographer Rusty Geller S.O.C.

FTI and The Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) are excited to present this truly unique workshop that will teach participants the tricks and techniques for capturing professional cinematic shots under the water's surface. Split into two sessions; Morning (Dry) and Afternoon (Wet), this UNDERWATER CINEMATOGRAPHY course is an opportunity to submerge yourself in a new filmmaking environment, while capturing some great footage for your reel.

About the tutor:
Rusty Geller S.O.C has worked in the motion picture industry (in Hollywood and Perth) for the past 40 years. While primarily an above water cameraman, specializing in visual effects and Steadicam, Rusty has worked on numerous underwater sequences for TV shows, features, documentaries and commercials, including: Addams Family Values, Needle, Storm World, Coors Lite, Nike Olympics, WA Museum Ruby Sea Dragon, US Department of the Interior American Samoa.

The course will cover both the practical and theoretical aspects of underwater cinematography:

Morning (Dry):

> Working underwater
> Photographic situations shooting underwater

> Optics: lenses and ports
> Flat ports and refraction
> Dome ports & the virtual image
> Underwater housings
> Features
> Preparation
> Operation
> Underwater lighting

Afternoon (Wet):
Participants will have the opportunity to submerge themselves in a training pool and emulate an underwater shoot with Rusty’s guidance. The class will have the opportunity to shoot with award winning cinematographer Rick Rafici's 6k RED DRAGON CAMERA in a custom built underwater housing, complete with Ports to service Cooke S4, Summicron C, Arri Ultra Primes and Zeiss Compact Prime Lenses. Rick will also showcase a second housing which features a follow focus and remote wireless system for Director splits, which he has used on feature films and high-end commercials.
