There’s no denying that pizza is the ultimate comfort food. Crispy crust, tangy sauce and gooey cheese – what’s not to love? To celebrate the dish, we munched our way through Phuket, happily packing on a few extra kilograms to bring you the island's best slices.

From the classic Neapolitan to thick and crispy alla palla-style and even the hearty Detroit deep-dish, we pulled together the best places to get your fix.

What it is: A prestigious yet quirky Italian restaurant in Old Town, serving modern Neapolitan pizzas alongside Italian classics and wine.

Why do we love it: Marni has a unique take on Neapolitan-style pizza – the cornicione is so airy and pillowy, it feels like biting into a cloud while the centre remains thin, soft and pliable. The truffle burrata prosciutto pizza (B480) bursts with intense aromatics and generous fresh truffle shavings. Besides pizza, the menu branches out into briny Cancale oysters, burratina and tomato salad that screams summer and the rich truffle pasta proves this kitchen's Italian credentials extend far beyond the wood-fired oven.

Time Out tip: This popular eatery fills faster than you can say ‘pizza margherita’. Book ahead, especially for weekends. If you can snag a terrace table, do it – there’s nothing quite like dining al fresco in Phuket while pretending you’re in a bustling Italian piazza.

Marni. 95, 18 Montri Rd. 12pm-10pm.

What it is: Traditional Neapolitan pizzeria that has earned international recognition for following Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana guidelines.

Why do we love it: The decor blends Italian elements with Phuket touches, creating casual elegance. Their secret lies in 24-hour fermented dough using high-quality Caputo flour to produce a chewy, crispy-topped crust that's gloriously messy. The crust is oily, leaving your hands dirty and ready to stain your brand new shirt with little compassion. The signature la peppina (B360) is a classic margherita dream with creamy buffalo mozzarella and sweet piennolo tomatoes. But the asparagus coppa di testa (B360) steals the show. The unexpected raw and finely sliced asparagus adds a refreshing crunch, brightened by a light vinaigrette dressing – savoury, tangy and flavourful. Save room for tiramisu.

Time Out tip: Book ahead as Peppina is the hottest ticket since opening in My Front Yard Community Mall. Request the VIP table facing the open kitchen for front-row pizza-making theatre.

Peppina Phuket. My Front Yard Community Mall, Building A4 5/75, Wichit. 11am-11pm.

What it is: Chunky, slow-fermented Detroit-style squares that rise fluffy in resistance to Phuket’s Neapolitan pizza dominance.

Why do we love it: With a playful, blue-and-red robot decor that feels straight out of an anime fever dream, MODO corners the market for soft, doughy treats in Phuket. Its signature squidgy, cake-like square pastries fill a niche that is otherwise underrepresented on the island. Baked in steel pans at their sole Phuket Old Town location, these thick-crust beauties bring serious comfort-food satisfaction with a nicely caramelised edge and soft interior. Their marinara sauce also deserves special mention, best enjoyed with classic pepperoni for some hard-hitting nostalgic notes. Meat lovers can dine on supreme, loaded with toppings that satisfy more serious appetites.

Time Out tip: MODO pizzas are deceptively filling beasts. Bring your friends to tackle a full tray and sample multiple flavours as these squares can humble even the hungriest of solo diners.

MODO Pizza Phuket. 101/1 Soi Sun Uthi, Phuket Old Town. 12pm-10pm and Sunday 12pm-10.30pm.

What it is: A decade-old Kata Beach institution specialising in Roman alla pala pizza – Rome's favourite street food that's perfect to grab-and-go. Currently, Phuket's sole purveyor of this authentic rectangular-style pizza.

Why do we love it: +39 keeps it authentic with Italian imports, a 72-hour fermentation and low-temperature baking process that creates an exquisitely contrasting texture with the crisp exterior yielding to pillowy softness within. Six flavour combinations from B120 per slice venture beyond basic margherita. The pumpkin cream and speck combine sweet-smokey complexity, while gorgonzola and walnut hit rich and nutty notes. Choose your slice and, while they bake, take a seat in waiting with a refreshing spritz in hand as you soak in the Italian vibes.

Time Out tip: Ideal for takeaway or Grab delivery to the beach. Come at aperitivo hour (5pm-8pm) for one cocktail plus two slices at B400. Groups should book ahead for their signature one-metre pizza experience served on wooden trays.

What it is: Well-established Italian chain with five island locations beloved by expats for reliable dine-in and speedy delivery. They specialise in wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas and distinguish themselves by making in-house cheese and cold cuts.

Why do we love it: Da Moreno nails the price-to-quality ratio with generous toppings and consistent execution. The calzone alla bruno (B450) packs Parma ham, buffalo mozzarella and rocket into simple perfection while the pizza prosciutto e funghi (B290) delivers reliable satisfaction. Don't overlook their spaghetti alle vongole (B280) – tender and juicy clams in white wine sauce that rivals the pizza offerings.

Time Out tip: When full, stock up on authentic Italian essentials before leaving. Their homemade cheese and quality cold cuts are available for purchase on-site to create your Italian feast at home.

What it is: Authentic New York-style pizza with oversized slices and full pies that takes you straight to the streets of Brooklyn. Available for delivery or takeaway from their red brick-walled shop in Chalong.

Why do we love it: These are proper New York slices – huge, foldable triangles that need both hands and no shame. The classic pepperoni (starting at B400) hits all the right notes, but this is also Phuket's no-judgement zone for pineapple lovers. And if you order delivery, they throw in extra Parmesan and raw honey that transforms an already solid slice into something borderline addictive. Perfect for lazy days when you want comfort food without the fuss.

Time Out tip: Order a full pie for your next Netflix binge. These beauties are made for sharing and meant to fuel some real indulgence. For sunset beach sessions, grab a couple of giant slices to go and prepare for the most satisfying seaside snack of your life.

What it is: A family-run trattoria near Chalong Pier, an all-time fave by Rawai and Chalong locals for their pizza tonda Romana, thin-crust style with a satisfying crispy bite.

Why do we love it: Agli Amici’s pizza strikes a superb balance with a thin base that shatters at first bite yet sturdy enough to hold generous toppings without collapsing. With over 40 topping combinations (including half-and-half options), they cater to every craving without losing focus. The wood-fired char adds smokey depth while keeping prices refreshingly honest – margherita starts at just B200. It's the kind of neighbourhood restaurant where you may bump into an old friend.

Time Out tip: Great spot to refuel after a day of diving or island hopping. Choose an outdoor table to soak up the local atmosphere and tackle one of their massive two-topping pizzas washed down with local beer.

Pizzeria AGLI AMICI da Michele & Jimmy. 32/9 Chao Fah Tawan Tok Rd, Chalong. 4pm-10pm. Closed Monday.

What it is: Pizza Sondrio is Kamala's hidden gem for real wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizza. This cosy pizzeria blends beachy bohemian vibes with rustic cabin charm and the fast food neighbours make it an easy choice when cravings hit.

Why do we love it: Pizza Sondrio stands out in Kamala's limited dining scene with excellent wood-fired pizzas. After 48 hours of fermentation, their crust emerges fluffy with excellent char and crispness. Capricciosa (B370) showcases their dough mastery beautifully. Signature vegetarian pizza (B340) with feta, tomatoes and balsamic delivers punchy flavours. Creamy burrata is particularly lovely, though the Italian balsamic drizzled on top makes it best enjoyed in moderation.

Time Out tip: This local secret deserves seeking out for relaxed evenings when you're craving top-tier Neapolitan without leaving Kamala.

Pizza Sondrio. 33 Kamala 1, Kamala. Open 3pm-11pm.
