The Afro Yaqui Music Collective is a 9-piece outfit which descends from a tradition of revolutionary jazz ensembles for whom social justice and musical innovation are one. Co-led by Gizelxanath, a soprano whose voice has graced the stage with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and operas across the world, and her husband Ben Barson, a Baritone saxophonist who "has the heft and sound to represent [this] assertive approach (The New York Times)." Together, Barson and Rodriguez combine funky, dynamic and unpredictable jazz arrangements with the music of Gizelxanath's people, the Yaqui of Northern Mexico, a synthesis which calls for environmental justice and protection of the rights of original peoples and their way of life. Joining the band includes some of Pittsburgh's greatest jazz and new music musicians, such as guitarist Jon Bagnato, bass clarinetist Emily Cook, trombonist Aaron Johnson, bassist Beni Rossman, drummer Julz Powell, Erhu player Mimi Jong, and other special guests.
