Discover how drawing by hand underpins any creative practice. Los Angeles–based architect Lorcan O’Herlihy discusses his award-winning buildings, his views on architecture as a catalyst for change, and his passion for drawing.

Following the lecture, participate in drawing exercises developed by O’Herlihy, and stretch your imagination and skills! Explore issues related to color, transparency, motion, spontaneity, gravity, light, and composition through processes as wide-ranging as dripping paint to massive continuous line drawings. O’Herlihy and individual drawing instructors offer guidance throughout the evening. The museum’s monumental spaces and Heinz Architectural Center galleries—location of the Sketch to Structure exhibition—serve as the studios for this not-to-miss drawing event! This evening is designed for all skill levels and disciplines.

About the Presenter
Lorcan O'Herlihy has designed and built within the bounds of real-world politics, and embraced the role of architecture as a catalyst of change since founding his firm Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects (LOHA) in 1990. O’Herlihy was recognized by the Architectural League of New York as one of eight “Emerging Voices” internationally, and elevated to the College of Fellows by the American Institute of Architecture in 2009. LOHA has been published in more than 20 countries and recognized with more than 100 awards, including the AIA Los Angeles Firm of the Year. O’Herlihy couples his professional practice with academic and intellectual pursuits, teaching and lecturing widely over the past decade, including at the Architectural Association in London, Southern California Institute of Architecture, Cranbrook Academy of Art, University of Michigan, Columbia University, University of Southern California, and at Washington DC’s National Building Museum.

Cosponsored by the Heinz Architectural Center at Carnegie Museum of Art and the Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture.
