Indie Yoga says
Come explore rhythms of West Africa in a fun, supportive, and challenging environment! Learn traditional techniques and rhythms from Guinea, Mali, and Senegal on the djembe and doundoun drums. Special emphasis will be put on the subtleties of feeling that accompany rhythm. Innovative technique will also be shared to help free up your playing and broaden your range of expression.
The class will be appropriate for all levels, and a number of drums will be available for use and purchase.

The djembe and doundoun (dununba, sangban, kenkeni) drums of West Africa have been used for centuries to accompany a wide variety of celebrations and ceremonies, and are synonymous with community, rights of passage, and strength of spirit.

Gabriel carries a wealth of knowledge about drums and drum culture, which he shares with enthusiasm and ease. His teaching style is friendly, uplifting, and appropriately challenging.
In addition to studying and performing with masters in the Bay Area, Gabe has made several trips to Guinea, Mali, Senegal, and Ghana to learn the secrets of the drum. In 2001 Gabriel founded Rhythm Village, which has presented countless performances and workshops in a large variety of settings, from school programs to executive team building programs. As a performer, he has shared the stage with such artists as Joan Baez, The Grateful Dead, Carlos Santana, Mickey Hart, Indigo Girls, Babatunde Olatunji, Pete Escovedo's Latin Jazz Ensemble, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, and many more.
