Balboa Theatre - San Diego says
Known for captivating crowds with his exceptional guitar performances and enthusiasm, John Hiatt is called “…one of rock’s most astute singer-songwriters of the last 40 years” by the Los Angeles Times, and continues to write brilliant character studies, with entertaining storylines, cunning lyrics and wry humor.

Hiatt’s new album, “Terms of My Surrender” will be released July 15, 2015. With his longtime guitarist Doug Lancio taking the producer reins, Hiatt set out to bring the songs’ character (and characters) into intimate focus. There’s a close-up, patina-festooned bluesy quality tying the tales together. But it’s blues in the knotty backwoods sense, as if sprung from the Delta loam. It’s completely a band effort, his current group, which he calls simply the Combo, a tight-yet-loose unit from years together on the road —Lancio on guitars, banjo and mandolin, Nathan Gehri on bass, Kenneth Blevins on drums, with keyboards from John Coleman on some of the tracks.

Composer, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and nine time Grammy nominee Taj Mahal is one of the most prominent and influential figures in late 20th century blues and roots music. His career began more than four decades ago with American blues – his early albums showing signs of the musical exploration that would become his hallmark – before his artistic scope began broadening to include music representing virtually every corner of the world, from West Africa and the Caribbean, to Latin America and the Hawaiian Islands.

In 2008, Taj joined the Heads Up International label to join Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Ziggy Marley, Angelique Kidjo, Los Lobos and others to perform on “Maestro: Celebrating 40 years.” As the title suggests, this 12 track set marks the fortieth year of Taj’s rich and varied recording career by mixing original material, chestnuts borrowed from classic sources and songs written by a cadre of highly talented guest artists, many of whom have been directly influenced by Taj’s music and guidance.
