The festival opens with this screening in tribute to the cartoonists who lost their lives in the terror attack on the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris on 7th January this year. First screened during the Cannes Film Festival last year, Stephanie Valloatto’s documentary paints a portrait of 12 artists from all over the world who have made a profession from satirical cartooning and dissident drawing, showing how their dauntlessness hides boundless courage in the face of genuine threat. The film also shows how the cartoonist can serve to measure the degree of democracy in a given country.
