Christmas is coming, but you’ve still got plenty of time to enjoy one of the best parts of the festive season: Christmas markets. Whether it’s picking up last-minute gifts for loved ones or just enjoying the atmosphere – whilst also enjoying a glass of mulled wine – markets are a great way to get into the Christmas spirit, and the best way to travel there is via train, especially as SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) have some special seasonal packages available.

These fantastic festive travel packages take care of your transport to and from the market, and provide visitors with great offers and discounts, ensuring you get the most from your adventure.

Best of all, there are four different areas across Switzerland featured in SBB’s travel offer, so you can simply pick the one that’s closest to you, or – better yet – visit all four and revel in some serious festive spirit.

Good news for holders of the ever-useful GA Travelcard – you can also take advantage of these top-notch travel offers. And the discounts can even be combined with a Half Fare Travelcard to further maximise the savings you’re making.

Here’s a little more info on each of the destinations, and remember that you can easily and quickly book these marvellous packages by visiting the SBB website.

Montreux Noël

This Christmas, the beautiful waterside area in Montreux that traces the shore of Lake Geneva has been transformed into a festive paradise measuring more than one kilometre. Wind your way past more than 150 chalets selling all the festive snacks, drinks and gifts you’ll need, including lots of locally made arts and crafts. If you’re in need of something more substantial after all that wandering, there are also several chalet restaurants on-hand to serve up hearty, warming meals. To top it all off, you can even catch Santa Claus flying through the sky on his sleigh every day from 5pm. Younger visitors can also visit Santa Claus’s home at the Rochers-de-Naye to complete the festive fun.

Make the most of a whopping 50% off your journey to and from Montreux with the SBB offer, plus an equally impressive 50% off a Montreux Noël souvenir collector’s cup, and 50% off a mulled wine or hot tea (perfect for keeping you toasty as you browse the chalet stalls) and a tasty pretzel.

Light on Ice by Montreux Noël

While you’re in Montreux, make sure you don’t miss a brand new area, ‘Light on Ice’, an enchanted, illuminated forest with an ice skating rink to really give it that winter feel. It’s a fantastic place for all the family to visit, and even if ice skating isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy the atmospheric Ice Bar, dishing out rejuvenating drinks for all visitors.

Make your skating excursion even more enjoyable with a 20% discount on two hours of skating as part of SBB’s travel offer. Skate hire is included in the admission price, and if there are any children from 0-5 years as part of your group, they’ll be able to skate for free. Good news for everyone, then.

Christmas in Basel

This gorgeous city feels like it was made for Christmas, perhaps because of its ultimately festive (and award-winning) Old Town Christmas market, which feels a little like stepping into the North Pole. You can stay festive as you move around the town, too, thanks to the much-loved Christmas tram and Christmas ferry.

The SBB travel package means you can take advantage of 30% off the outward and return journeys to Basel (the onward journey to Basel has to be taken after 10am), plus you get to indulge in some discounted retail therapy with a CHF 10 shopping voucher.
