As California slowly emerges from lockdown, large amusement parks are tentatively planning to reopen this summer. In San Diego, Legoland and other attractions are eyeing a July 1 reopening date.

This week, amusement parks along with the USS Midway Museum will meet with county health officials to go over their plan for a safe reopening including personal protective equipment, social distancing measures, cleaning and sanitation protocols, work and sick policies, employee screenings, COVID training and customer communication including signage and website messaging.

A document posted by the San Diego Tourism Authority went into more detail, stating that safety changes would include temperature and wellness checks for employees, masks for guests and workers, reduced capacity at the parks, a six-foot separation for entry and ride queues, Plexi shields at food stations, and regularly disinfecting ride vehicles.

Amusement parks in Orlando, Florida will reopen next month, including Legoland on June 1 and Disney World on July 11. Other Southern California amusement parks such as Disneyland have not yet announced their reopening dates, although the state has said that it will allow amusement park to reopen in Phase 3 of California's reopening plan.

Update: This post has been updated to remove the San Diego Zoo from the list of amusement parks hoping to open in July.
